I have to admit I have a love/hate relationship with this closet. It’s a custom closet installed by the previous owner. My issue…the doors don’t actually work. The hangers (standard size huggable hangers) seem to be too big. You have to push the clothes and hangers back to slide the doors shut. And speaking of the doors, I’m not in love with mirrored door fronts. It just screams 70s to me. But the mirrors can be replaced and we’re in the process of correcting the issue with the hangers vs the sliding doors. What I do love is all on the inside. The shelves, the hanging areas, the space. It’s perfect for what I’ve got. I have the closet divided into three sections; clothes, shoes (my favorite), makeup and other items.
Section 1: Clothes
I have my tops hanging in somewhat of a color-coded fashion on the top along with jackets and hang-able sweaters. My bottoms (jeans, dress pants, skirts, shorts) hanging below. To save a bit of space I have my jeans hanging two per hanger. I try to pair up like styles ie: distressed, dressy, linen, etc, so I know what I’m reaching for. Under the hanging tops is where I store my camera equipment and sewing box.
Section 2: Shoes
This is my favorite thing about my closet…my shoe shelves. I’ve pretty much always tried to fashion some sort of shoe shelf situation with each closet I possess. When we first moved in, the shelves didn’t exist. Instead there was an additional hanging section above the drawer and shelves below. Knowing I wouldn’t need that much hanging space (thank you KonMari Method) I went to Lowes and had some shelves cut from MDF to match the existing shelves. And Voila! My dream shoe shelves were born!
In the drawer I keep my sunglasses, wallets, and watches. I use the small box (half of a birchbox) in the bottom corner as a catch-all for items that move from purse to purse with me.
Below the drawer is where I keep my baseball caps.
Section 3: Makeup and more
You’ve seen my makeup collection and storage before. When we moved into the house I knew I didn’t want to change that. The space originally had small shelves but after removing a few of them, my Alex Drawers fit perfectly! Above my makeup, I have a shelf for my perfumes, one for my hoodies, and one for my smaller cross-body bags. I also utilized the small shelving for my sweaters that were too heavy to hang.
The hanging space in this section is used for my dresses and anything too long to hang in section 1. Below the dresses are my boots. I use boot shapers to keep them upright but wine bottles and cut down pool noodles work just as well.
On the very top shelf I keep a basket of extra sheets and various tote bags (stuffed into a giant tote bag). I also keep all of my larger handbags up there. I have stuffed each handbag with newspaper to help maintain the shape.
We store all of our DVDs in the black boxes (more on that coming soon). And my teddy bear that has been with me since I was two hangs out up there as well. I have to keep him out of reach of the pup. Our dog is not to be trusted around stuffed animals.
This is the smallest room in our house and yet it has so many purposes; guest room, office, vanity, closet. A true multi-purpose room.
